The project is constructed around 8 work packages.

WP1. Project management. The objective of the first work package is to co-ordinate the project from the scientific, technological, administrative and financial point of view.

WP2. Assessment of cold chain performance and consumer expectation in Europe. In this work package, we will construct the framework for the rest of the project. We will develop a comprehensive database of the cold chain in Europe, identify refrigeration needs and available current technologies in the food industry, and investigate consumer needs and expectations with respect to the food cold chain.

WP3. Establishment of QEEAT tools for evaluation of quality, energy consumption and environmental impact of refrigeration technologies. The objective of this work package is to provide evaluation tools (sensors, equipment, software, protocols and methodologies) to assess and improve existing refrigeration technologies and emerging new technologies, with respect to quality of refrigerated foods, energy efficiency, and sustainability.

WP4. Improvement of existing refrigeration technologies. In this work package, we will improve existing refrigeration technologies in terms of food quality, energy use and environmental impact. The emphasis will be on the design of thermal energy storage devices and on model predictive controllers. Special emphasis will be paid to the use of intermittent (possibly non-conventional) energy.

WP5. Emerging refrigeration technologies. The aim of this work package is to develop emerging refrigeration technologies at the laboratory scale. Seven promising technologies will be considered of which four are systems based (air cycle refrigeration, magnetocaloric refrigeration, nanoparticles and vacuum insulated panels) and three are food based (super­chilling, supercooling and smart packaging).

WP6. Development of technologies. The aim of this work package is to develop and scale-up the most promising technologies studied. Technologies to be developed here will be at industrial scale.

WP7. Demonstration. Using the results of WPs 2 to 6, the advice of industrial partners, consumer expectations and the Advisory Board, the FRISBEE consortium will take the decision to develop particular applications for demonstration.

WP8. Dissemination. The main innovative project results and the main innovative findings will be disseminated to consumers, industry, academia and policy makers involved in the refrigeration and food sector and raise awareness of the project to a larger public audience such as food industry associations, energy agencies, consumer asso­cia­tions and regulations authorities.
